NEW DELHI: Indian cricket legend and former captain Kapil Dev suffered a massive heart attack on Friday.

The 62-year-old was admitted to Fortis Escort Hospital in Delhi where he underwent angioplasty.

His condition is said to be stable now.

In a statement, Fortis Escorts Hospital said, “Former Indian Cricket captain Kapil Dev, age 62 years, came to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (Okhla Road) emergency department at 1:00 am on 23rd October with a complaint of chest pain. He was evaluated and an emergency coronary angioplasty was performed by Dr Atul Mathur, Director of Cardiology Department, in the middle of the night.”

The hospital statement added, “Currently, he is admitted in ICU and under the close supervision of Dr Atul Mathur and his team. Kapil Dev is stable now and he is expected to get discharged in a couple of days.”

Kapil Dev is the best all-rounder India has ever produced. Under him, India won the World Cup for the first time in 1983. His whirlwind 175 against Zimbabwe in that tournament is rated as one of the best innings ever played by any Indian cricketer.

Kapil played 131 Test matches and 225 ODIs for India. He is the only player to have taken more than 400 wickets and scored 5,000 runs in Test matches.

Not surprisingly, Kapil was named the Indian Cricketer of the Century in 2002 by Wisden.
