MUMBAI: When Madonna married Guy Ritchie in the year 2000 after trashing the institution of marriage after her divorce from Sean Penn, she was 10 years his senior. The marriage ended eight years later.
Elizabeth Taylor was 20 years his senior when she married Larry Fortensky in 1991. She was 59 and he was 39. This was Liz’s seventh marriage which ended in a divorce in just five years.
Now our own and yesteryears’ silver screen siren Zeenat Aman is going one up on these divas by tying the knot with an unknown business man who is 30 years her junior.
So at 60, Dum Dum Maaro Zeenie is set to put an ugly past – beatings by her late husband Mazhar Khan, physical attack by actor Sanjay Khan and a lost eye – behind and give love another shot.
Her new love is said to be 33-year-old Sarfaraz Ahsan Ahmed. He is reportedly a realtor with interests in politics and cinema. He is also said to be a familiar face in the Shiv Sena shakhas of Mumbai, Pune and Nashik.
But this love story is becoming a little weird as Ahmed says he is a married man with a kid.
“I have known Zeenatji for a few years and have great respect for her. It is embarrassing to see her being dragged into this – she is a legend. I am a married man with a kid, and it has made things very difficult for me at home,” he told the Times of India, without denying his affair with Zeenat.
For her part, Zeenat too says, “They got the wrong guy. This is not the man in my life at all. This gentleman that a section of the media has made into the man in my life is someone I’ve known over the years. He is part of the Shiv Sena. I met him when I attended a couple of Shiv Sena events.”
Earlier, she had spoken about her new lover, saying, “I am a celebrity. Though I am happy that my fans are still interested in my life, it would be irresponsible on my part to thrust him into the limelight now. The relationship is not at that stage yet…when it does, I will let the world know.”
She had told Mumbai Mirror, “We met, we fell in love and we dated like normal people do. Then I spoke about marriage. That’s about it. I think all women should do the same (give romance another shot). Age should not come in the way of love.
“The decision to marry is every woman’s entitlement, irrespective of her age. That part of me, the one that thinks independently, wants to settle down with the one I love. And this decision has made my close ones very happy. I have the support I need when I eventually take the plunge again. Until then, I hope the world gives me the privacy I need to make this work.”
Remember this sexy icon of the 1970s had Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, cricketer Imran Khan and many others as her suitors. But she rejected them all. However, her married life turned out to be nightmarish.
She came out openly about her abusive marriage to Mazhar Khan and told the world how she was beaten up by him. After Mazhar’s death, Zaheer Aslam was her companion for some years even as she brought up her boys – Anaan and Zahan – in her Juhu apartment in Mumbai.
“But that relationship was over four years ago,’’ she said recently.
