NEW DELHI: Anita Goyal, wife of Jet Airways boss Naresh Goyal, was detained at Mumbai airport when she was found bringing a pet dog into India from London in violations of rules.
The incident happened on last Saturday when Ms Goyal landed with a Maltese breed pet dog on a Jet Airways flight from London at 11 am.
She was fined Rs 36,200 before being allowed to go.
According to the Times of India, Ms Goyal was found in violation of Jet Airways own rules that don’t allow pets to be carried in the plane’s cabin. Only a disabled passenger or those coming to India on transfer are allowed to bring their pets on board but only after fulfilling required rules and regulations such clearance by vets and a licence from wildlife and export and import authorities.
But Ms Goyal was in neither category as she was coming to India to spend one month, as the Goyal family is based in London.
Though Anita Goyal had a certificate from a vet, she didn’t have other documents, the Times report said, adding that nobody knew how she was allowed to board the Jet Airways flight in London with the pet.
However, a Jet Airways spokesperson was quoted as clarifying that the dog accompanying Anita Goyal was “in the cargo and not in the cabin. It was in a pet basket required for the transfer. She had all the necessary certification and documents. She paid all charges required in compliance.’’
