MUMBAI: Her rocky relationship with Suraj Pancholi, son of Aditya Pancholi, seems like the definite cause of suicide by actress Jiah Khan on Monday night.
The 25-year-old actress hanged herself with a dupatta from the ceiling of her bedroom in the family’s Juhu apartment between 11 pm and 11.30 pm on Monday night, minutes after making her last call to Suraj Pancholi at 11.23 pm.
No suicide note was found in her bedroom.
The actress had met 22-year-old Suraj through a social networking site and developed a relationship with him As per the sequence of events on Monday, Suraj had sent her a bouquet of flowers at about 9 pm for landing some new roles. But an angry Jiah Khan asked the apartment watchman to throw them away in the garbage bin. At 9.30 pm, she drove to Suraj’s house and tried to contact him. When he didn’t respond, she returned home. From her home, she sent her last SMS to Suraj saying that she would move back to London if things don’t work out.
But when her mother Rabiya Khan, who had reportedly gone out for dinner with Aditya Pancholi, returned home, she found it locked from inside. When the door was broken open, Jiah Khan was found hanging from the ceiling of her bedroom.
Police questioned Suraj Pancholi at the Juhu police station.
Expressing her shock over the tragedy, Suraj Pancholi’s mother Zarina said, “My thoughts and prayers are with Rabiyaji (Jiah’s mother) for it is she who has suffered the greatest loss today. May Allah grant her the strength to cope with this tragedy. Jiah was such a pretty girl, and although I never met her in person, I was aware of her relationship with my son.’’
She added, “”Suraj is trying to make his way in the industry and is extremely busy attending dancing lessons, gymming. Perhaps Jiah’s grouse was that he could not devote enough time to her.’’
Police are also looking at the possibility whether Jiah Khan’s depression after not doing well in an audition test in Hyderabad recently was also the trigger for the suicide. Her mother has reportedly told the police that her daughter was depressed after the audition test in Hyderabad on June 2.
Since Jiah Khan had last acted in 2010 in Housefull, she was also considering interior designing as a career for herself, according to her mother.
The post-mortem report has confirmed that hanging was the cause of her death. London-raised Jiah Khan had moved to Mumbai with her mother to make a career in films. She had made her Bollywood debut opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Ram Gopal Verma’s Nishabd in 2007.
Choreographer Farah Khan said, “Can’t register that Jiah is no more… Worked with her in Housefull and she was so beautiful and such a good soul. Too young to go Jiah.”
Arshad Warsi tweeted, “Shocked to hear about Jiah Khan, she was too young to give up on life. RIP”
In her tweet, Dia Mirza said, “RIP Nafisa (Jiah) Khan. You were too young and beautiful…”
