NEW DELHI: The who’s who of the Indian capital attended the wedding reception for the newly wed Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan here on Thursday.
Hosted by Saif’s mother Sharmila Tagore, the wedding reception or Dawat-e-Walima at a lavishly decorated cream-and-rose coloured government bungalow No 31 on Aurangzeb Road was attended by Rahul Gandhi and many union ministers, including Farooq Abdullah, Kamal Nath, Rajiv Shukla, and Jyotiraditya Scindia.
Apart from Gursharan Kaur, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s wife, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Sitaram Yechuri of the CPM, Arun Jaitley of the BJP, Amar Singh formerly of the SP, Renuka Chowdhury of the Congress were among prominent politicians to attend the wedding reception.
Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and former minister Shashi Tharoor and his wife Sunanda were also among those who came to wish the newly wed couple a happy married life.
From Bollywood came Madhur Bhandarkar and Nandita Das.
Cricketer friends of Saif’s dad Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi included Bishen Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev and Ajay Jadeja. In fact, Kapil came with his daughter Amiya.
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Anjolie Ela Menon also attended the reception.
While Kareena wore a gold-coloured gharara, Saif wore a black sherwani by Raghvendra Rathore as his mother and host Sharmila herself looked gorgeous in a gold-coloured sari as she greeted the guests.
The couple had court marriage in Mumbai on Tuesday.
This is the second marriage for 42-year-old Saif Ali Khan who was previously married to actress Amrita Singh – paternal niece of writer Khushwant Singh – with whom he has a daughter named Sara and a son named Ibrahim Ali.
The couple divorced in 2004, and since 2007 Saif has been seeing Kareena.
Interestingly, Saif was 12 years junior to his first wife Amrita whom he married in 1991 and he is 12 years senior to his new wife Kareena.
