LONDON: With an estimated 50,000 people in Britain converting to Islam each year, it is the newly converted who are becoming more radicalized as proved by the killing of soldier Lee Rigby by a black convert and his associate in Woolwich here on May 22.
Now another white convert Ashraf Islam, 30, whose name before conversion was Mark Townley, has been arrested for threatening to kill Prince Harry.
Islam reportedly went to a police station a day after the killing of Lee Rigby to tell the cops that he wanted to kill Prince Harry. He was promptly arrested and now faces up to 10 years in jail for threatening to kill the third in line of succession to the British throne.
Prince Harry, who has twice done duty in Afghanistan, has been a target of the Taliban.
Islam reportedly became a Muslim in 2011 when he was jailed.
Michael Adebowale, 22, who is the main accused in the killing of soldier Lee Rigby on May 22, had also converted to Islam during his teens. He was radicalized by his association with a known hate preacher of Britain.
The other high-profile convert to Islam in Britain is Richard Reid who tried to detonate explosives on a trans-Atlantic flight in 2002. Reid, who was born in Kent, converted to Islam in his teens while he was in jail for a petty theft.
