NEW DELHI: The Mumbai-based woman journalist, who has accused Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal of sexually assaulting her, has resigned from the magazine.
The woman, who happens to be the daughter of Tarun Tejpal’s best friend, reportedly wanted to be “free from any kind of pressure” from the Tehelka management.
The resignation comes after the woman journalist alleged that her family was being subjected to “intimidation’’ and pressure to “protect” Tejpal.
Tejpal, who has been booked on charges of sexually molesting her on Nov 7 and 8 in a five-star hotel during the Thinkfest organized by Tehekla in Goa, has moved the Delhi High Court for an anticipatory bail. He has also sought transfer of his case from Goa as he has alleged that “political forces are driving much of it.’’
A special investigation team of Goa Police questioned Tehelka managing editor Shoma Choudhury and got possession of many documents on Saturday. The team left Delhi without interrogating Tarun Tejpal.
But Goa DIG O.P. Mishra said in Panaji on Sunday, “We have not established contact with Tarun Tejpal yet. But he added that more charges could be slapped on Tejpal as more facts emerge in the on-going investigation. There are many things which emerged during the course of investigation. The investigation is a dynamic process and as soon as it is carried forward and things emerged, if additional charges are required, they will be added according to the development in the course of action…They (SIT team) have also seized certain electronic items during the investigation.”
Tehelka managing editor Shoma Chaudhury, who was questioned for nine hours, said, “The Goa Police took my deposition for about 9 hours, it was extremely courteous experience and I fully cooperated and showed every document that was relevant, every email exchange that was there between my colleagues, the management, it was shared, it was a good experience and I hope it helps bring clarity and justice to the entire case.’’
Tejpal stepped down for six months on Wednesday to “do penance’’ for the alleged sexual assault on the woman journalist.
The woman journalist, who is in her early 20s, reportedly told her three colleagues and wrote to Tehelka managing editor Shoma Chaudhury in detail about the alleged molestation by Tejpal during `Thinkfest’ which was attended by Hollywood actor Robert de Niro and Nobel laureate V.S. Naipaul and others. The victim said in her letter that she took time to report the matter as “it was Tarun who molested me.’’ She said Tarun Tejpal was someone she “so deeply respected and admired for so many years.”
