NEW DELHI: Sujata Singh, the Indian ambassador in Germany, has ben appointed as the new foreign secretary.
A 1976 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Sujata Singh takes over from Ranjan Mathai who retires on July 31.
Sujata Singh, 59, will be at the help for two years as she retires in July 2015.
She is the wife of fellow IFS officer Sanjay Singh who retired as secretary (east) this April. She is also the daughter of former Intelligence Bureau chief T.V. Rajeshwar.
Sujata Singh beat Indian ambassador to China S Jaishankar – who was in the contention because of his excellent work in his current assignment – to the top bureaucratic job at the Indian foreign ministry.
But Prime Minister Manmohan Singh finally okayed the name of Sujata Singh for the top diplomatic position.
Sujata Singh will be the third woman to occupy the top position of the foreign secretary in quick succession following stints by Chokila Iyer and Nirupama Rao.
