TORONTO: The name of SlutWalk may be changed.
SlutWalk started off in Toronto in April 2011 as a protest by young women after a Toronto police officer’s remarks that dressing like a slut is an invitation to rape. It quickly became a global phenomenon.
Samantha Harris, organizer of SlutWalk in the Canadian city of Winnipeg, has now been quoted as saying by the CBC that the name of the event may be changed.
“SlutWalk is a very controversial name, it caused a lot of controversy for our first three years, and we noticed the numbers do dwindle. We don’t know if it’s because of the name or what it is,’’ Harris was quoted as saying.
The name SlutWalk was chosen perhaps as an overreaction to the cop’s use of the word `slut.’
In fact, the first SlutWalk in Toronto in April 2011 saw young women dressed provocatively and the trend caught on globally.
But the organizers are now having second thoughts about the name as it doesn’t conjure up positive image of women.
