TORONTO: The Indian consul general in Toronto and politicians have joined in wishing a happy Vaisakhi to the Sikh community of Canada.
In his message, Toronto-based Indian Consul General Akhilesh Mishra said, “It gives me immense pleasure to wish all, especially my Sikhs brothers, sisters and their families, on the auspicious occasion of Vaisakhi. It is an occasion to celebrate faith, history and tradition. It was on a Vaisakhi Day in the year 1699 that the Tenth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh ji founded the Khalsa Panth or the order of the pure ones and gave a unique identity to Sikhs. ‘’
Mishra added, “On this day, the Guru administered amrit (nectar) to his first batch of five disciples making them Singhs, thereby eliminating the differences of high and low and establishing that all human beings were equal reflecting the profound message of the Shabad:
Awal Allah noor upaya, kudrat ke sab bandey
Ek noor te sab jag upja, kaun bhaley kaun mandey.
“May this auspicious day of Baisakhi usher in the fulfillment of all hopes and dreams of everyone. I wish a joyous Baisakhi to all.’’
Mishra, who is known for literary inclination and multi-lingual fluency, ended his message poetically:
“Rabb Har Saal Ehoji Baisakhi Lyaavey
Pyaar di jyot dilam vich jalaa jaavey
Bichhdey dilaan nu milaa jaavey
Rabb har sal ehoji Vaisakhi lyaavey
Jithey har bichhadyaa pyaar mil jaavey.’’
Tom Mulcair, leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, “I would like to wish all those celebrating across the nation a very happy Vaisakhi.
“This year marks the 315th anniversary of the creation of the Khalsa Panth by Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the mother of the Khalsa Mata Sahib Kaur Ji. The Khalsa’s commitment to justice and equality are values cherished by the NDP.’’
The NDP leader said, “As many Canadians gather to celebrate throughout this month, New Democrats join you in renewing our commitments to the principles of Kirt Karna, Vand Shukna and Seva. Subh Noo Vaisakhi Dee Lakh Lakh Vadhaiyee Hove Ji.’’
