NEW DELHI: Just a day after the couple seemed to have weathered a Twitter storm over their relationship, Sunanda Pushkar, the wife of Union minister Shashi Tharoor, was found dead in room number 345 in the 5-star Leela Hotel here where the couple had checked in just a day earlier.
Just on Thursday, Sunanda and Tharoor had said that they were “happily married’’ after a tweet row over the minister’s alleged involvement with 45-year-old Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar from Lahore.
Sunanda had accused Tarar of trying to “break” her marriage by `stalking’ her husband while she was away for medical treatment.
The row unfolded after exchange of intimate tweet messages involving Tharoor, Sunanda and Tarar got leaked.
Tharoor had said in the statement, “We wish to stress that we are happily married and intend to remain that way. Sunanda has been ill and hospitalised this week and is seeking rest. We would be grateful if the media respects our privacy. We are distressed by the unseemly controversy that has arisen about some unauthorised tweets from our twitter accounts.”
The 57-year-old minister of state for human resources married 52-year-old Sunanda in 2010. Tharoor, who was a contender for the UN top post, represents Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) in Parliament. The two were married twice before their third marriage.
Expressing shock over Sunanda’s death, the Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar said in Lahore, “What the hell. Sunanda. Oh my God! I am absolutely shocked. This is too awful for words. So tragic I don’t know what to say. Rest in peace, Sunanda.”
Tarar, who has a 13-year-old son, has denied any affair with Tharoor, saying, “I met him in April last year for an interview in India. Then I met him in June in Dubai in a social gathering. Yes, I have been in touch with him once in a while on Twitter and email.”
