NEW DELHI: As the last rounds of Indian parliament elections come closer, BJP PM nominee Narendra Modi is sharpening his attacks on the Gandhi family.
On Sunday, Modi said Sonia Gandhi’s blind love for her son has ruined the country.
Sonia’s “blind love for her son has left the country in ruins. Will anything come out of him? Can the country live believing him?” Modi said while addressing a rally at Haveri in Karnataka.
Modi said Sonia’s blind love for her son made Manmohan Singh the prime minister for the second time even when he didn’t want to be. He cited remarks by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan that Manmohan Singh didn’t want to be PM after his first term.
“When Manmohan Singh got the chance to head the government for the second term, he refused it with folded hands. He did not want to become PM. But Madam (Sonia) made him forcefully because she did want to give charge to someone else till Rahul got ready for the job. It was at the cost of the well being of the country.’’
The 63-year-old BJP leader, who has come under attack for not revealing his marital status during the elections since 2001, said, “Brothers and sisters we cannot leave the country to ruin, we will not allow this country to be looted, we will not allow this country to be divided.’’
Taking a dig at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has described as a puppet in the hands of Sonia by his former media advisor Sanjaya Baru in his book titled The Accidental Prime Minister — The Making and Unmaking Of Manmohan Singh, Modi said, “If two scooters meet with an accident maximum, two or three people will die. If two buses meet with an accident 40 to 50 people will die, if two aircraft meet with accident, 700 to 800 people will die. If two trains meet with accident, 200 to 300 people will die. With accidental PM, 125 crore people will die and the future of our youth will get in darkness.’’
