MUMBAI: Actor Sanjay Dutt, who surrendered before the special designated court here on Thursday for his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case and was sent to Arthur Road Central Jail, spent his first night of the 42-month-long jail term by reading religious books in his `Anda’ (egg-shaped) cell.
Moslty, terrorists or high-risk prisoners are kept in Anda cells.
“Last night, he read some spiritual books he brought along with him. He also did physical exercise this morning. However, the actor appeared restless and kept to himself,’’ a police official was quoted as saying.
The judge has allowed him to carry the Gita, the Ramayana and Hanuman Chalisa inside the jail. The religious books were among the some concessions granted by the court on Thursday. He has also been allowed his own mattress, toiletries and mosquito repellent.
In all likelihood, the actor may be shifted to Yerwada Jail in Pune where he spent 18 months in 1993-94 after his arrest in the case.
According to reports, Sanjay Dutt’s counsel Rizwan Merchant has made an oral plea to court that the actor is feeling `suffocated’ inside the Anda cell and wants to be shifted out to another cell on the grounds that he is not a terrorist as he has not been convicted under the TADA.
The police official was quoted as saying that “if things permit, he may be kept in Arthur Jail. However, the chances of shifting him to Yerwada appear to be more bright.’’
