MUMBAI: Actor Sanjay Dutt has been assigned prisoner number 16656 by Yerwada Jail authorities in Pune.
The actor was secretly shifted from Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail to Pune’s Yerwada Jail early Wednesday.
“Sanjay Dutt was escorted to Pune jail at about 4 am from Mumbai. There were three police vans that took him to the Pune jail,’’ a jail official said.
The 53-year-old actor, who surrendered before the TADA court last May 16, was moved to Pune jail for security reasons, the official said.
He had been lodged in an Anda (egg-shaped) cell in the jail and was felling comfortable as reported by his lawyer earlier.
Though Sanjay Dutt was to be shifted to Yerwada immediately after his arrest, authorities said they were assessing the risk factor by knowing how many high-risk inmates, particularly those with links to the underworld, were in Yerwada.
The actor had earlier reported threats to his life from the underworld.
Sanjay Dutt had spent 18 months of his previous incarceration in Yerwada Jail after his arrest in the 1993 Mumbai blasts.
