MUMBAI: Actor Sanjay Dutt, who is undergoing a 42-month sentence at Pune’s Yerwada Jail in connection with the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, has been given a one-month parole ostensibly on the grounds that his wife Maanyata is ill.
“He has been granted one-month parole on the recommendation made by the prison officials. The date of his release on parole will be decided by them after completing the formalities,’’ PTI quoted Pune Divisional Commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh Deshmukh, who is the authority to grant parole in this case, as saying.
But Maanyata seems to be all right as per reports in some sections of the media. She attended the special screening of Shahid Kapoor’s film R… Rajkumar on Thursday. After the screening – which was attended by Shahid Kapoor, his father Pankaj Kapoor, producer Krishika Lulla and director Ashutosh Gowariker – Maanyata also went for Lulla’s birthday party.
Another parole to Sanjay Dutt triggered protests by the Republican Party of India whose members staged a demonstration at Pune’s Yerawada Central Jail where Sanjay is held. The party threatened to fill jails if the actor is shown `favouritism’ by the authorities even as Maharashtra home minister R.R. Patil ordered an inquiry into the basis on which Sanjay has been granted parole
The 53-old actor, who was given a 14-day parole in October to attend family functions, had it extended by another two weeks on medical grounds.
Before heading back to jail on October 30, Sanjay Dutt had reportedly said that he had problems with his legs.
