MUMBAI: Actor Sanjay Dutt will spend another three and a half years behind bars after the Supreme Court of India on Thursday upheld his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
However, the court reduced his jail time from six to five years.
The blasts, which were the brainchild of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and Pakistan’s ISI to avenge the Babri demolition, killed 257 people and injured over 700.
Sanjay was held for possessing an AK-56 rifle and a 9 mm pistol. The AK-56 was part of the consignment of weapons and explosives smuggled into India to cause the serial blasts.
After his arrest in April 1993, Sanjay confessed that he had received a cache of arms just two months before the serial blasts and that he had kept the AK-56 with himself.
His telephonic conversation with Anees Ibrahim, brother of mastermind Dawood Ibrahim, also clinched the case against him.
A special TADA court, created under India’s Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA), in July 2007 sentenced him to six years in jail. Sanjay has already spent more than 18 months behind bars.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court upheld his conviction by the TADA court. Sanjay, who remained with his wife and children in Mumbai, said he will appeal the verdict. He, who has one month’s time to report back in jail, can file review petition in the apex court.
Since Sanjay won’t be allowed to shoot films during his jail term, many on-going projects involving him may be hit. According to sources, over Rs 250 crore (almost $49 million) is at stake in various on-going film projects involving the actor. Major upcoming films involving Sanjay Dutt include Zanjeer, Policegiri and Ungli.
The Supreme Court also upheld the death sentence of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, who is the brother main conspirator Tiger Memon as well as life sentence of 16 of the 18 convicts.
The apex court also commuted the death sentence of 10 others to life sentence. With Thursday’s verdict, the curtains comes down on the Mumbai serial blast case. Though Sanjay is not new to jail, he heads the list of Bollywood actors and actresses to be given the severest punishment. Here are the Bollywood stars who went to jail:
