NEW DELHI: Godman Asaram’s son Narayan Sai, who has been declared an absconder for his failure to surrender in connection with an alleged sexual assault case, was spotted near Delhi on Saturday.
Asaram Bapu and Narayan Sai have been accused of rape by two sisters from Surat over a period of years in their ashram in Ahmedabad and Surat.
While Asaram Bapu is already in custody for the alleged rape of a minor, Narayan Sai has been on the run since the FIR was filed by the two sisters on Oct 6.
But on Saturday night, he was sighted travelling in a white-coloured Scorpio on the Yamuna Expressway on the outskirts of the national capital.
Recognizing him, a toll plaza employee shouted his name. But Narayan Sai sped way towards Mathura.
Police, who were informed about Narayan Sai, are now examining the CCTV footage from the toll plaza area.
On the other hand, the police in Mathura have picked up a person who looks like Narayan Sai but has given his name as Amit Bharadwaj.
He was arrested early Sunday when the police searched a van and found the suspicious man who looks like Narayan Sai. When he was taken into custody, he said his name is Amit Bharadwaj. Police are verifying his antecedents to ascertain whether the lookalike is actually Narayan Sai.
In the FIR, the two sisters have alleged that they were sexually exploited by godman Asaram Bapu and his son over a period of time while they worked and stayed at their ashrams in Ahmedabad and Surat.
According to their FIR filed in October, the elder sister says she was sexually exploited by Asaram Bapu between 1997 and 2006 at his Ahmedabad ashram.
The younger sister alleges in the FIR that she was beaten up, illegally confined and sexually exploited by the godman’s son Narayan Sai between 2002 and 2005 at their Surat ashram.
Narayan Sai has been on the run since the FIR was filed, even though his close aide has been arrested. Sai has reportedly shaved his beard and head to evade arrest. Raids to find him in Delhi, UP and Bihar have yielded no results.
The Gujarat Police has announced an award of Rs 5 to anyone giving clues to the fugitive Narayan Sai who has reportedly shaved his head and beard to avoid being identified.
