NEW DELHI: Pakistani executed police commando Mumtaz Qadri who had shot dead Punjab Governor Salman Taseer in Jan 2011.
Dawn reported that Qadri was hanged in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi early Monday morning.
Qadri, who was in the security of the Governor, had pumped 28 bullets into Taseer in an Islamabad market in broad daylight for his opposition to blasphemy laws of the country.
He was sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court. The Supreme Court of Pakistan upheld the sentence in October and later President Mamnoon Hussain.
Two weeks after Tasser’s assassination, Pakistan’s only Christian minister Shahbaz Bhatti was also gunned down for similar reasons – his opposition to blasphemy laws.
Qadri’s body was handed over to his family.
