NEW DELHI: Even as Indians get over the shock of the December 16 gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in the Indian capital, yet another similar incident of gangrape and subsequent of killing of a woman train passenger has been reported from Bihar on Sunday.
In Punjab also, a bus passenger was gangraped by the bus driver and his accomplices in Gurdaspur district.
In the Bihar case, the 32-year-old woman, who was travelling on the New Delhi-bound Brahmaputra Mail on Saturday, was reportedly dragged to a mango orchard and gang-raped by unidentified persons after she alighted from the train between Vikramshila and Kahalgaon stations in Bhagalpur district.
According to the Press Trust of India, after the gnagrape the woman was strangulated and her body hung from a tree late Saturday. Police recovered the body on Sunday and sent it to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital in Bhagalpur for post-mortem.
The report said the victim, who hails from New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, boarded the train from Alipore to Delhi, along with her son.
As the train was jampacked, she tried to get down at Sahibganj but was prevented from doing so by co-passengers, Bhagalpur Assistant Superintendent of Police Meenu Kumari was quoted as saying.
When the train slowed down between Vikramshila and Kahalgaon stations, she jumped out. It is not clear why she took this step. A group of inebriated people then dragged her to a nearby mango orchard and sexually assaulted her, the agency said.
At the other end of the country in Punjab, a bus passenger was gangraped by the bus driver and his accomplices in Gurdaspur district.
The 29-year-old married woman had boarded the bus from her parents’ home at Janakpur village in Pathankot to return to her village Ghukla in Gurdaspur district on Friday.
On the way, all the other passengers alighted leaving her as the lone passenger in the bus. When her village approached, she asked the driver to drop her.
Instead of dropping her, the driver Daler Singh and conductor Ravi drove her to an undisclosed location and gangraped her on Friday night with their accomplices, according to reports.
After the gangrape throughout Friday night, the rapists dumped the victim near her village on Saturday morning. The victim’s family lodged a complaint with the police at Kanhuwal police station – under which her village falls.
Police said six of the accused have been nabbed and the hunt was on for others.
This is the second such shameful incident in Punjab after a 17-year girl committed suicide in December alleging harassment by police after she was gang-raped by two men with the connivance of a woman at Badshahpur village in Patiala district on Diwali night.
Punjab has the dubious distinction of a skewed sex ratio in the country because of female foeticide.
