TORONTO: NDP MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan on Thursday introduced a bill to designate the month of January as Tamil Heritage Month.
“Tamil Canadians have prospered in communities across the country and enriched our social, cultural, economic and political fabric. Tamil Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate these accomplishments and community involvement,” said Sitsabaiesan while introducing the bill.
“The month of January is very important in the Tamil community. It is when we celebrate Thai Pongal, the Harvest Festival and Tamil Heritage Month,” Sitsabaiesan added.
“This bill would enshrine Tamil Heritage Month in law so that throughout Canada, every year, the month of January will be known as Tamil Heritage Month.
“I am proud to present a bill that recognizes and honours Tamil heritage and will help raise awareness of the contributions of Tamil Canadians throughout our country.”
