NEW DELHI: BJP godfather Lal Krishan Advani, 87, who has been upstaged by Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi for the prime ministerial post in case the party and allies cross the 272-mark in the upcoming parliament elections, says Modi is no Atal Behari Vajpayee.
Advani, who is credited with making the BJP what it is taking by undertaking his historic Rath Yatra in 1990, made this remarks while filing his nomination for the Gandhinagar seat in Gujarat on Saturday.
Throwing his weight behind Modi, Advani said he Modi will become the next prime minister of India.
But then he took an oblique jibe at his former protege who has upstaged him and put paid to own prime ministerial ambitions.
Advani said Modi cannot be compared to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
“Modi will become the prime minister of the country, but I would not compare him to Vajpayee,’’ Advani said.
“Atal ji was a class by himself. While Deen Dayal Upadhyay was the main ideologue of the party, it was Atal Ji who implemented it in governance.’’
But then he spoke glowingly about Modi, saying that he much more than his former protege. He said he has never seen a person who is better than Modi in management and efficiency with which he has ruled Gujarat.
These qualities, the BJP patriarch said, make Modi eminently suitable for the top job the party has assigned him.
