NEW DELHI: A Surat court in Gujarat issued non-bailable warrants on Tuesday against godman Asaram Bapu’s son Narayan Sai and his three accomplices in connection with the FIR filed by two sisters alleging rape by the father and son.
While the 72-year-old godman Asaram Bapu has been under arrest since September 2 for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl in his ashram near Jodhpur in August, his son Narayan Sai has been on the run since the two sisters from Surat filed the rape case.
In their FIR against Asaram Bapu and Narayan Sai filed on October 6, the two sisters alleged that they were sexually assaulted by the godman and his son from 1997 to 2006 when they worked at Asaram Bapu’s ashrams in Surat and Ahmedabad.
Both of the sisters are now married, and they said they dared to came forward only after the godman was arrested in another alleged rape.
According to the FIR, the elder sister was sexually abused the godman himself at his Ahmedabad ashram, and the younger sister by his son in their Surat ashram.
Tuesday’s non-bailable warrants were issued after a plea by Surat police who have failed to locate Narayan Sai.
Police said if Sai fails to surrender, he would be declared a proclaimed absconder and his property (which means the godman’s Surat ashram) seized.
Narayan Sai has reportedly shaved his beard and head to avoid being arrested. Police said he was last seen somewhere in eastern Uttar Pradesh where raids are being carried out to nab him.
The godman Asaram Bapu and his son Narayan Sai run a multimillion empire which includes ashrams dotted across India and medicine manufacturing units.
But their empire collapsed in August when the septuagenarian godman allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl student at his ashram near Jodhpur on August 15.
A couple of days later, the girl broke down and narrated the incident to her family who then filed an FIR against the godman in Delhi. After evading arrest for a few days, the godman was finally nabbed from his ashram in Indore on September 1 and taken to Jodhpur where he committed the alleged rape.
