TORONTO: It was all NaMo, NaMO, NaMO at a weekend gathering of Indo-Canadians at the Sringeri Temple here.
The gathering, organized by Laj Prasher of the Canada India Foundation, rooted for Narendra Modi as India’s next prime minister.
Among the gathering were Senator Asha Seth, Senator Consiglio di Nino, MP Patrick Brown, Dr. Atul Tolia, entrepreneur-philanthropist Vasu Chanchlani and many others.
Before the speeches, videos of various rallies of Modi and his powerful speeches were streamed on a huge screen, with catchy headlines like ‘hum is desh ko jukhne nahin dhenge (We won’t let India down).”
In his speech, organizer Laj Prasher enthusiastically told the packed hall why NaMo will be the next Prime Minister of India. He cited a recent article in a noted mainstream newspaper that stated the youth of India wanted jobs, sanitation, health care, security, no corruption and NaMo was the right candidate to deliver.
Following the opening speech, Senator Asha Seth, MP Patrick Brown, members of the Sikh community and others addressed the audience with energetic speeches.
However, the man who made no bones about anything was senator Con Di Nino. He said that despite opposition from the government he and MP Patrick Brown went to Gujarat a couple of years ago and were impressed to see the vibrancy in the state. He said it is being said that the 21st century is for India to take, but he would say, “With Narendra Modi at the helm, the 21st century will belong to India!”
The hall erupted into loud cheers and deafening applause!
Vijay Pandya, public relations officer of the organizing committee, also delivered his speech in Hindi with exemplary brio.
Harshad Patel, a young speaker, went down to the nitty-gritty, narrating his recent visit to his small village, Moti-Karod in the district of Navsari in Gujarat, and how this place of not more than 1000 people has 24-hour electricity, running water and gas connection to every home. Primary schools were equipped with computers and internet. Grand cricket grounds had been constructed. He said the village which was a desolate place 10 years ago has been totally transformed into a thriving place thanks to Modi’s policies.
He said if Modi’s policies can transform such a small village in Gujarat, just imagine what every small town in India can accomplish under his leadership of India!
And so ended the amazingly upbeat evening!
