DUBAI: Toronto-born Masala! Mehndi! Masti! dazzled Dubai with its brilliant opening on Thursday as crowds were treated to a sizzling potpourri of South Asian culture – from Bollywood to Balochistan, from Southall to SDIPA and everything in between.
Shiamak Davar’s Dance Company opened the 12th annual event, held for the first time outside of Canada, with its breathtaking performance.
Dubai, host city for the first time, also witnessed The Kerala Chendamelam Drummers, a groups of Malayalee drummers of all ages and Pakistani singer Shazia Khushk with her full stage production of musicians and dancers wowing the crowds with Dama Dum Mast and other provincial favorites.
Gurukul staged a wonderful compilation of Kathak performances directed by Pali Chandra, setting the stage for Ash King, the UK-bred singer of Te Amo and Auntyji fame.
The evening closed with a superb performance by Salim and Sulaiman Merchant who sang their favorite film hits. They were joined by Dubai-raised Canadian singer Shweta who was as usual excellent.
The venue wore a festive look with traditional M!M!M! colors.
