TORONTO: As we know, actresses such as Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Sigourney Weaver, Sarah Jessica Parker, Helen Miren, and Sally Fields are names to reckon in Hollywood. Special roles are created for them as their image changes as they marry and raise families. But on the other hand, the image of actors hardly ever changes in spite of their marital status.
Not long ago, the trend in Bollywood was that the heroines had a short shelf life. So most heroines tried to do as many films as possible before their marriage. When they reached the pinnacle of their career, they got married to a rich – maybe an NRI – guy and faded into oblivion.
Of late, the trend in Bollywood has changed. Post marriage and children, most married Bollywood actresses are coming back to stake their place in the limelight again.
The most impressive comeback after marriage is that of Sridevi. Last year, with her sensitive, heart-warming performance in English-Vinglish she proved that age is only a number and that talent is ageless.
Madhuri Dixit, the Dhak Dhak girl, returned bag, baggage, children and an adoring husband from the US to relaunch herself in Bollywood. Of course, she was warmly accepted when Yash Chopra gave her the role of a dancer – in Aaja Nachale.
The film did so-so business. This proved that Madhuri is here to stay. She is now anchoring a dance show, Jhalk Dikhla Jaa on television.
After her marriage to Jai Mehta and two kids later, Juhi Chawla is also back in action doing some meaningful cinema.
Karisma Kapoor too staged a comeback, though her movie didn’t do so well. But she is keeping herself busy in the limelight.
Raveena Tandon, the sexy siren and former mast mast girl, is also doing few films. Who can forget the song `Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast.’
Dream Girl Hema Malini has shown time and again that she remains the ultimate dream girl of Bollywood. And the ever-green diva Rekha keeps us guessing about her age. She keeps appearing in film award functions, with her south Indian Kancheevarams and exotic jewellery. She is an integral part of the Krish series.
Neetu Singh, the innocent girl of Khel Khel Mein and mother of youth icon Ranbir Kapoor, is already in many movies after her comeback in Do Dooni Chaar. Post-marriage, Kajol has been roped in a few of Karan Johar’s movie such as My Name is Khan with Shahrukh Khan.
And now movie fans are waiting for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s return after her baby and guessing what is Vidya Balan’s next movie, post marriage. I guess now is the best time for heroines in Hindi movies which are being tailor-made for them and producers are not hesitant to take a married Bollywood actress in the prime role.
We would like to see married Bollywood actresses more and more on the silver screen.
