LONDON: Pop diva Mariah Carey charged almost $1.5 million for performing three songs at the New Year eve party of the son of the Sultan of Brunei.
The 43-year-old singer who was born dirt poor in New York and is said to be worth $300 million today, was flown to London from New York with her entourage, including her husband and children, was reportedly paid almost £1million for performing at the private party by Prince Azim, 31, at the Dorchester Hotel.
The five-time Grammy winner Carey was invited by the billionaire prince, who has known her for years, to perform at his private party.
She reportedly sang her three hits, including Always Be My Baby, and led a chorus of Auld Lang Syne, according the Daily Mail.
Diana Ross also performed at the elite party in the British capital.
Among the special invitees by the Prince were model Jerry Hall and actresses Sophia Loren and Faye Dunaway.
Carey and her family were put up in a £5,000-a-night suite at the hotel.
Prince Azim is the son of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah who has ruled Brunei since 1967 and is called `dictator’ for ruling his oil-rich country strictly.
Carey had also performed at the New Year’s party of one of the sons of the late Libyan dictator Muamamr Gaddafi in 2008. She later apologized and gave the money charged from the concert to charity.
