NEW YORK: Pop queen Madonna, 55, has come out with a shocking revelation that she was raped at knife-point when as a teenager she came to New York from Michigan to try her luck in the 1970s.
“New York wasn’t everything I thought it would beIt did not welcome me with open arms. The first year, I was held up at gunpoint. Raped on the roof of a building I was dragged up to with a knife in my back, and had my apartment broken into three times. I don’t know why; I had nothing of value after they took my radio the first time,’’ the pop Diva writes in the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar.
Talking about her initial days in New York, Madonna says, “I was defiant. Hell-bent on surviving. On making it…But it was hard and it was lonely, and I had to dare myself every day to keep going. If I can’t be daring in my work or the way I live my life, then I don’t really see the point of being on this planet.’’
As a new teenager in New York, Madonna had to struggle very hard for survival. She used to work at Dunkin Donuts in part-time shifts to earn money as a struggling young artist and was thrown out of that job for unintentionally squirting jam on a customer’s face.
The Material Girl says, “Most people (in New York) thought I was strange. I didn’t have many friends; I might not have had any friends. But it all turned out good in the end, because when you aren’t popular and you don’t have a social life, it gives you more time to focus on your future.’’
Madonna says her difficult times in New York taught a valuable lesson to stand up for herself.
“One of the many things I learned from all of this: If you aren’t willing to fight for what you believe in, then don’t even enter the ring.”
In her essay for `The Daring Issue’ of Harper Bazaar, the pop diva also talks about her life’s daring decisions – such as moving to a foreign country, adopting children from abroad and studying Kabbalah. She also writes about her decision as a teenager not to shave her legs or under her arms. However, she started shaving under arms later.
