NEW DELHI: The Delhi government led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday won its first confidence motion within a week of its swearing-in and declared all-out war on corruption.
Arvind Kejriwal had formed the new government last week with the support of the Congress after securing 28 seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly in the Dec 4 elections.
The Congress, which was humiliated after its three terms in office and reduced to just seven seats, is supporting the AAP government from outside.
After fulfilling its poll promises of cheaper electricity and free water up to 700 litres to Delhiites, Kejriwal said after winning the trust motion that his government will call the first session of the Delhi assembly to pass the Lokayukta bill to root out corruption.
“Now that the AAP government has won the trust vote, real test begins,’’ said Kejriwal, after winning the confidence motion.
Speaking before the trust-motion vote, Kejriwal said his government won’t spare the corrupt. Those found guilty would be meted out the severest punishment.
Kejriwal, who has refused government bungalow and VIP car with red beacon, said, “The VIP raj has ruined the nation. We want this VIP culture be abolished from Delhi and the entire nation.’’
Hitting out at other parties, he said, “The politics of our country has gone bad, criminalization of politics has affected the common man of the country.’’
Congress leader Arvinder Singh Lovely said, `As long as the AAP government keeps working in people’s interest, we will continue supporting them.’’
But the leaders of the BJP which secured 32 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly accused the AAP of double standards for forming government with the support of the Congress.
“After taking support from Congress, you don’t have the moral right to talk about morality or honesty,’’ said BJP leader Harsh Vardhan.
“You can form the government in alliance with a party which you kept on accusing of corrupt practices, but if we take support of other party for the NDA, we will be criticized,’’ said Vardhan who was the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate.
Another BJP leader Naresh Gaur called the AAP government “Natak waali sarkar’’ which won’t last.
