NEW DELHI: Najeeb Jung, vice chancellor of Delhi-based Jamia Millia Islamia, is the new Lieutenant Governor of of the Indian capital.
Jung will be the first Muslim to hold this position created in 1948. He is a former IAS officer of the Madhya Pradsh cadre. Apart from holding various positions in government, he has also worked the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Oxford Institute of Energy Studies.
Jung replaces Tejendra Khanna who has held the post since 2007.
A Rashtrapati Bhavan communique also said that former Delhi police KK Paul, who is the son of former Panjab University vice chancellor R.C. Paul, has been appointed governor of Meghalaya.
Iqbal Singh Saini, Lt Governor of Puducherry, has been replaced by Congress leader Virendra Kataria.
Lt General (retired) Bhopinder Singh, Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, gives his place to Lt General (retired) AK Singh.
