MUMBAI: Anwar Iqbal Warsi, a 45-year-old Indo-Canadian man from Brampton who is in Mumbai, has been charged with theft by a woman.
Warsi, who has been granted anticipatory, faces charges of stealing cash and valuables worth over Rs 80 lakh from Tasneem Khatri who is the daughter of a Mumbai builder.
As per the details of the FIR filed by Tasneem, who is the daughter of Fateh Mohammed Khatri of FA Constructions, her husband Qayyas married another woman without telling her. And this another woman is Anaam Khatri who is the niece of the Brampton man.
In her complaint, Tasneem alleges that her husband and his second wife stole Rs 40 lakh in cash and 200 tolas of gold worth Rs 40 lakh from her Bandra flat.
She has named her husband Qayaas and his second wife Anaam, Brampton man Anwar Iqbal Warsi and his brother Tariq and Tariq’s wife Lubna as suspects in the theft.
In her complaint, the woman has also alleged that her husband duped her by fraudulently getting her sign papers to a flat gifted to her by her father and mortgaging it to a bank for Rs 1.5 crore
While the Brampton man’s brother Tariq and his wife Lubna have been arrested for the alleged theft, Warsi says he was not in India when the theft took place.
“I was in Canada when the alleged theft occurred. This complaint is nothing but a ploy to harass us,’’ Warsi has told Mumbai Police.
But police say they have prima facie evidence against the Indo-Canadian man. “We have also checked his passport details and will proceed with our investigation,’’ according to police.
