NEW YORK: Rahul Gupta, 25, an Indian American student of George Washington University who was found guilty in the Oct 2013 killing of his childhood friend and law student at the same university, was given life sentence by court in Montgomery County on Wednesday.
Gupta suspected that his girlfriend Taylor Gould was cheating on him with his best friend Mark Waugh and killed him after a drunken frenzy in his apartment in Silver Springs, Madison, on Oct 13, 2013.
Gupta slashed Waugh 11 times with a knife when he was lying next to him. He himself was found covered in blood as Waugh bled to death on the floor of Gupta’s apartment. Waugh was 23.
After his arrest, Gupta had told the police, “My girlfriend and my buddy were cheating. I walked in on my girlfriend and my buddy cheating. I killed my buddy.”
But during his trial, Gupta changed his version and said that it was his girlfriend Taylor Gould who killed Waugh when she was heavily drunk.
But his girlfriend, who too was found covered in blood on that night, said during the trial that she knew nothing about it as she was heavily drunk.
But it was Gupta’s conversation with his dad after the murder that did him in. In the conversation, Gupta told his dad, “Mark and I got into a fight and he tried to get a knife, and then I got a knife.”
The three of them – Gupta, his girlfriend and Waugh – were drinking and celebrating Gupta’s birthday into the wee hours of Oct 13, 2013, in Gupta’s apartment when the tragedy happened.
Gupta and Waugh were close buddies from high school. While Gupta was doing his master’s degree in biomedical engineering from George Washington University, Waugh was a first-year law student at the same university.
On that fateful day, Gupta, his girlfriend and Waugh first went out to celebrate Gupta’s birthday. Then three of them returned to Gupta’s apartment which he shared with his girlfriend. The three kept drinking and enjoying themselves late into the night when the killing took place.
