NEW YORK: Indian American doctor Vivek Hallegere Murthy has been nominated to the post of surgeon general of the United States by President Obama.
An M.D. from Yale School of Medicine and an MBA from Yale School of Management, Dr Vivek Murthy, if he is confirmed by the Senate, will the first Indian American doctor to the head US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
The US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is a uniformed service just like the US army and has 6,500 highly trained professionals on its rolls.
In 2011, Obama had appointed Dr. Murthy as a Member of the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health.
Currently, Dr Murthy is serving as Hospitalist Attending Physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School. He is co-founder and president of Doctors for America which is a Washington-based advocacy group for access to quality health care for all.

He brings two decades of experience as a champion in improving health, building coalitions, and bringing diverse people together to bring better health to communities.”
Dr. Murthy also co-founded VISIONS Worldwide in 1995 to promote education and awareness about HIV/AIDS in his ancestral India and the US, where he served as President from 1995 to 2000 and Chairman of the Board from 2000 to 2003.
Making up about 8 to 9 percent of medical professionals, there are over 80,000 Indian American doctors in the US. The nomination of Dr Murthy is a big boost to the Indian American doctors’ community.
