NEW YORK: Famous Indian American Attorney Preet Bharara, whose office got Rajat Gupta convicted in American’s most infamous insider trading case last year, is now after Osama Bin Laden’s son-in-law who has been arrested and brought to New York.
Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, who was part of the terror plot of Sept. 11, 2001, has been lodged in a lower Manhattan jail, just a half-mile from Ground Zero where nearly 3,000 were killed in the terror attacks. The Kuwaiti-born Muslim preacher was reportedly arrested by the CIA and the FBI in Jordan last week.
During his 20-minute appearance before Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of United States District Court in Lower Manhattan on Friday, Ghaith pleaded not guilty to his role in the 9/11 attacks.
“The law has a long arm, and justice has a long memory,’’ U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said, referring to the pending trial of Sulaiman Abu Ghaith.
The 47-year-old Ghaith is married to Bin Laden’s daughter Fatima. Fatima is Bin Laden’s daughter from his first of his five wives. Her whereabouts are not known.
Ghaith had appeared in a video released by bin Laden a day after the 9/11 attacks in which he (Ghaith) was seen urging Muslims to fight “the Jews, the Christians and the Americans’’ and “not to board any aircraft and not to live in high-rises.’’
Punjab-born Bharara, who was named as one of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World’’ in 2012 by Time magazine, is famous for saying that “as crime has gone global (after 9/11) and national security threats are global, in my view the long arm of the law has to get even longer. We can’t wait until bombs are going off.’’
His office secured convictions of Pakistani-born Times Square bomber Faisal Shazad and Ahmed Ghailani who was the mastermind behind attacks on US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
Bharara was born to a Sikh father and Hindu mother in Ferozepur in Punjab and moved to the US when he was very young.
