NEW DELHI: An Indian court on Saturday jailed for life all the six accused in the gangrape of a Swiss tourist in Madhya Pradesh in March.
The incident shamed India globally as it came just three months after the gangrape and subsequent death of a medical student in the national capital of Delhi.
After a speedy trial, special judge Jitendra Kumar Sharma in Datia in Madhya Pradesh found all the accused – Brajesh, Bhutaha, Rishi, Ramparo, Vishnu and Nitin – guilty of the sexual assault on the foreign tourist and gave them life sentence.
The 38-year-old Swiss tourist was sexually assaulted by the six men when she and her husband were traveling on bikes from the tourist spot of Orchha in Madhya Pradesh to Agra on March 15.
The tired Swiss couple were camping in the forest of Jhadia village near the district town of Datia when the six men tied the husband and gangraped the woman. They fled the scene, taking the couple’s cell phone, laptop and cash with them.
The victim, who left India immediately after the assault, identified the accused through videoconferencing.
