LONDON: Anushka Sharma, who debuted in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, will now be seen essaying the role of a spoilt, outspoken girl in Vishal Bhardwaj’s uniquely-titled film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola.
“I play a strong headed, outspoken girl in the film. My character Bijlee is a rich, spoilt brat and is allowed to run wild in her village, which is practically owned by her millionaire father – Harry Mandola played by Pankaj Kapur. She is educated in the world’s best college and has traveled the world,” she said here.
Describing the film as a dark comedy, Anushka calls the movie Bhardwaj’s ‘most commercial project’. “I think it is Vishal sir’s most commercial project if I can say so.”
The movie stars Imran Khan, Pankaj Kapur and Shabana Azmi.
Anushka has been paired onscreen with Imran Khan for the first time and feels excited about it. “This is the first time that Imran and I are working together in a film. This is a fresh pairing. I never thought we would have such a different look in the film. I think Imran looks hot in this film!”
Praising Vishal Bhardwaj as a director, the 24-year-old actress said, “Vishal sir brings out the best in his actors. He is known for giving his heroines fully rounded characters with enough grey shades to make them real and interesting. But I can easily say the character of Bijlee is easily amongst his most complex heroines.”
She added, “We used to conduct readings with Sir’s (Vishal Bharadwaj) assistance. He has a way of getting the actors under the skin of their character so the scenes turn out convincing.”
Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur, who is known for the gravitas in his performances, will also be seen shaking a leg with his co-actors in Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola.
When asked if he took any tips from his son Shahid, Kapur senior said, “Our choreographers and their assistants helped me a lot with a lot of rehearsals. Shahid did say, ‘Dad, just relax and have fun!’ So that helped me to take it forward.”
Pankaj Kapur does accept that initially it was pretty difficult for him to pick the dance movements, but after some time he was comfortable with it.
Speaking of dancing in MKBKM, he said, “It’s not something I have done in any of my films, so it was a new experience. I had to do rehearsals. It was difficult to pick the steps initially, but I later started enjoying it.”
The 58-year-old actor, who has given stellar performances in movies such as Roja, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron and Maqbool, says that he is willing to experiment with interesting and varied roles. “I am open to scripts. I am hoping that interesting subjects come my way. There is a perception that I do certain kind of films. That’s not true. I am open to any good scripts with a good role.”
Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is a comedy set in Haryana and revolves around the millionaire Harry Mandola (played by Pankaj Kapur) and his daughter Bijlee (Anushka Sharma). Matru (Imran Khan) is a law graduate who works for Harry Mandola and falls in love with Bijlee. Aryan Babbar plays Badal who gives their love story a twist.
The film is due to release on January 11.
