MUMBAI: IIT Kanpur’s former director Sanjay Dhande has become a victim of online fraud to the tune of Rs 19 lakh.
In a complaint to police in Pune, the 65-year-old Dhande says he never received any SMS alerts about online transaction from his account. He said came to know the fraud only when he got an SMS telling him that the deposit in his account has gone below the required limit.
Indian Express quoted Inspector Sanjay Tungar of the Cyber Crime Cell of Pune Police as saying that 22 online transactions were made from Dhande’s account between September 6 and 8. Four of these transactions involved money transfer and 18 related to shopping.
“We suspect the fraudsters to have obtained a duplicate SIM card with same number as that of the complainant and then blocked the SMS alerts to the original card,” the investigating cop said.
Interestingly, the former IIT director is a member of the National Security Advisory Board.
