NEW DELHI: Virendra Singh, BJP member of parliament who regularly dons a turban, has refused the US visa after he was asked to remove his headgear at the US embassy here.
Virendra Singh, who has been elected thrice from Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh, was invited by the embassy to visit the US because of his expertise on farming issues.
But this week when the MP went to the US embassy, he was asked to remove his turban for security reasons.
He politely refused to take off his turban and rejected the visa offer, saying that the turban is the symbol of their “traditional honour.’’
Virendra Singh said the turban is a matter for honour in the framing community.
He said, “How can I remove my pugree for the sake of security? I can never do it. It is they (the US) who had invited me to visit their country. I refused the visa. I said I am not interested.’’
