NEW DELHI: The mother of one of the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists from Pakistan – who carried out the attack on the Indian Air Force base in Pathankot – cried as her son told her that he is soon going to become martyr.
The call was made from the cellphone that the Pakistani terrorists snatched from a Punjab Police official by kidnapping him after they sneaked into India through a stream running across the India-Pakistan border in Gurdaspur.
The call by the terrorist to his mother is one of the many intercepted by Indian Intelligence Bureau. The terrorist in the intercepted call can be heard telling his mother in his southern Punjab accent that `I am going become a martyr soon’. The mother goes hysterical and she can be heard crying in the background, Indian Express has reported quoting intelligence sources.
The other calls were made to several phone numbers linked to senior Jaish-e-Mohammed leaders in Pakistan.
“I am speculating here, but the men seemed to be hysterical, and not very well-trained,’’ an intelligence official has been quoted as saying.
After crossing into India through the stream running along the India-Pakistan border on Friday morning, the Pakistani terrorists hijacked an Innova van with its driver Ikagar Singh and started driving on the Pathankot-Jammu highway. But when the van suffered a flat tyre, the terrorists killed Ikagar Singh with a knife and abandoned the van.
Then they managed to hijack the car of Punjab Police SP Salwinder Singh, who was travelling home from a religious dera. The SP’s friend Rajesh Verma and his cook Madan Gopal were also kidnapped.
Verma told Punjab Police that the terrorists were carrying assault rifles, a global positioning set, a cellphone and a big bag possibly filled with food items. They later thrashed the SP and threw him out and two others.
The terrorists mounted the attack on the Indian Air Force base after penetrating a 10-foot perimeter wall which is topped with razor-sharp cobra wire.
