TORONTO: An early morning fire destroyed a Sikh temple called Guru Ram Das Sikh community temple in the eastern part of Vancouver in Washington state in the US on Friday.
The local Sikh community had bought the property to build the gurdwara after the club went out of business in 2007. The fire broke out a little after 2 a.m.
Its current value is $231,000, according to property records at the county office.
The 200-strong Sikh community in the Portland metro area of Vancouver was still working to complete the temple which covers 17,000 square metres on the 2.5-acre property.
Two persons, thought to be construction workers, were at the site when the fire broke out. They were taken out safely by the first responders.
Though there are independent Sikh temples in the name of fourth Sikh master Guru Ram Das, the ones run by those who embraced Sikhism under the influence of Yogi Bhajan are mostly called Guru Ram Das Asharm.
