MUMBAI: The Delhi high court on Thursday reversed its decision of banning the release of Madhuri Dixit-Juhi Chawla starrer Gulaab Gang, based on the life of UP woman activist Sampat Pal Devi on her petition, allowing the film to be released on Friday.
Directed by Soumik Sen and produced by Anubhav Sinha, Gulaab Gang depicts the story of Sampat Pal Devi and her members who wearing pink saris fight for female rights.
Sampat Pal Devi had moved the court arguing that the film has been made without her permission and depicts her in bad light.
She said she had sent notice to film producer Anubhav Sinha in June last year to stop making the movie without her consent.
But they said that “the film bears no semblance to Sampat Pal Devi’s life,’’ Sampat’s lawyer Kush Sharma told Mumbai Mirror.
But “there is no group in the entire world other than Pal’s which protests wearing pink saris. Also, Madhuri’s character bears a striking similarity to Pal. She’s shown with a sickle in one hand and a laathi in the other. This is very derogatory for my client,’’ Sharma argued.
