Toronto extended a very warm welcome to veteran actor Dharmendra and his two sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol this week when they came to town to promote their latest film Yamla Pagla Deewana 2.
At a press conference, hosted by Punjabi International Film Festival (PIFF) and SAMA Models at the Radisson Plaza Hotel, Dharmendra spoke about the movie’s title as being a song from one of his past movies and being very close to his heart. It suited the film very much as it is just pure comedy and fun for the whole family to enjoy, he said.
Dharamendra said that though he has played many action roles in films, he is a very versatile actor and has always loved comedy and felt that comedy is in him to perform even though it is more difficult to do successfully.
The key to comedy is timing, he said. He also commented how comedy has evolved over the years from his film “Chupke Chupke” up to now.
Asked about the message of Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, he quipped that today’s audiences are too smart and intelligent to need a message. They prefer entertainment and fun to see them through life as it is today which is full of restlessness everywhere and is too fast paced.
Dharmendra said everything in this film is “double’’ the amount that the audiences saw in the first film – double the amount of fun, double the amount of great music, double the amount of comedy – and it was much better and bolder than the first one. Which is good, added Bobby, as the audience will get to see double of him as well!
However, there is a small message through the story of a father and son duo who are con men and it is through their emotional journey that we see the victory of good. He felt that there is emotion and humanity in his theme and he believes in humanity rather than any religion. Dharmendra said humanity is the best religion, and it is this religion (humanism) that should and will spread everywhere.
The veteran actor was extremely proud to say that one of the songs in the film was written and performed by his grandson who loves music, dance and acting.
Sunny Deol said that he was grooming his son to enter into the world of acting which he loves very much at his young age and that he was attending acting school as well. He said that the family would launch him with an in-house production when the time was right and for now he had shown his talent by doing this beautiful rap song and dance in the film.
We are thrilled to learn that one more generation of hot-blooded Deols will join the acting world to give the next generation some great action and entertainment and one who would be great at dancing!
Dharmendra was asked if he could kindly sing something from his film songs – a request which he politely declined but at a later time during the conference made up for by quoting some Urdu shayri (poetry).
The conference took a serious note when Dharmendraji was asked what he felt about Sunjay Dutt going to jail and how the film industry was supporting him.
He said Sunju is like a son to him and that his whole family has been very close to him for the last five decades and it is extremely difficult to fight the law. He felt that Sunju made an innocent mistake and that he and the industry can only give their support through prayers and hope the law is lenient towards him.
Dharmendra’s acting career has spanned almost 50 years in which he has played a number of different characters in different genres of films from action to comedy to romance. He says the road to success is not a highway or an express and that it has been full of ups and downs but attributes his success to the support of his fans and God’s blessings showered on him and his sons’ continuing success.
He said he and his sons are also working on their next film ‘Cheers’ and he hopes to still be in films for some time to come.
Now back to the fun part, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 is full of comedy, hit songs and great entertainment which promises to be a family blockbuster full of dhamaal and dhamaka. It opens June 6.
