NEW DELHI: Former Miss India Gul Panag will contest the upcoming parliament election from the Chandigarh seat on the Aam Aadmi Party ticket.
The 1999 Miss India replaces Savita Bhatti, wife of the late comedian Jaspal Bhatti who withdrew from the contest because of opposition by some party activists.
“Chandigarh is my home. I was born and brought up in Chandigarh. Like you, I also want an atmosphere of clean politics. That is why I have joined this. It is my humble request to all of you to become a member of this movement,’’ 35-year-old model and actress said as she kicked off her poll campaign in the city.
Interestingly, Panag’s father Lt. Gen (Retd.) H S Panag has been with the Aam Aadmi Party since it founding in Nov 2012.
With the former Miss India entering the poll fray, Chandigarh will witness an interesting contest as the Congress is again fielding heavyweight and former Union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal.
