Former Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla, who is known for her ties with the ruling Akali Dal in Punjab, is currently campaigning for her Akali friends as the election day of February 4 looms.
Addressing a rally in Ropar in support of the outgoing education minister and Akali candidate Dr Daljit Singh Cheema on Saturday, Dhalla ridiculed the Aam Aadmi Party as `topiwalas’.
As if this non-resident India from Brampton was speaking for all the Punjabis, Ruby Dhalla said that Punjabis would never allow ‘topiwalas’ to rule Punjab.
The term `topiwalas’ has often been used against the Hindus (particularly the Congress) by hardliners in Punjab.
The Akali Dal, which itself has a dubious history of playing the communal card whenever it suited the party, has resurrected the derogatory term `topiwalas’ with the intention of weaning Sikh voters away from the Aam Aaadmi Party which is likely to do very well in the Feb 4 elections.
