TORONTO: Dr Cabbie, which is Salman Khan’s debut film under his production house Salman Khan Films, is slated to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Directed by Jean-Francois Poulliot, Dr Cabbie introduces Katrina Kaif’s sister Isabelle Kaif, Toronto boy Vinay Virmani (of Speedy Singh fame), Rizwan Manji, Kunal Nayyar, Lilette Dubey, Adrianne Palicki,, Mircea Monroe and Chris Diamantopoulos.
Its first trailer is out.
The trailer, which Salman Khan opens by introducing himself, shows an immigrant Indian doctor landing in Toronto to “the land of opportunities’’.
His Indian medical credentials are made fun of and he is told to “try another career’’ when he goes for job interviews in his profession.
And everyone knows what is that “another career’’ for doctors in Toronto?
It is cab driving, and Toronto reportedly has the largest number of cab drivers who are qualified doctors from their countries.
This film is a humouous take on the doctor’s plight as he becomes “a cabbie like us.’’
With Canada facing shortage of doctors, when this immigrant cabbie doctor reaches out to a female passenger for medical help, saying, `trust me I am a doctor,’ she shots back, “no, you are a cabbie.’’
In his tweet, Akshay Kumar said, “#DrCabbie! What a breath of fresh Hinglish air. Well done my dearest Ajay & @Vinayvirmani24 Cannot wait to see this!’’
Vinay is the son of Toronto businessman Ajay Virmani.
