NEW DELHI: Former Jharkhand Ranji player Santosh Lal, 32, who was a teammate and close friend of Indian cricket captain Mohinder Singh Dhoni, passed away in a Delhi hospital on Wednesday.
Santosh Lal was suffering from acute pancreatitis and airlifted to Delhi from Ranchi early this week.
An employee with the Indian Railways, he is survived by his wife and a three-year-old daughter.
Dhoni, who is known for his famous `helicopter shot,’ has credited Santosh Lal with inventing it when they were playing for Jharkhand.
Dhoni, who is holidaying in the US with his wife Sakshi, had offered all financial help in the treatment of his friend and former Ranji teammate.
The Jharkhand State Cricket Association had donated Rs. one lakh for his treatment. Cricket players had also collected Rs. 39,500 for the player.
