NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the family members of the Delhi gangrape victim Nirbhaya Jyoti on Dec 31.
“The Prime Minister condoled their loss, and assured the parents that the Union Government would do its utmost for the safety and security of women,” said a government press release.
Nirbahaya was gangraped in a moving bus in south Delhi on the night of December 16, 2012, after she and her male companion boarded the chartered bus. After the gangrape, she was brutally injured and then thrown off the bus. Nirbhaya, who was flown to Singapore for treatment, died a week later, touching off nationwide protests.
Of the six accused, the driver Ram Singh committed suicide in Tihar Jail and four other were given the death sentence. A juvenile was spared the regular trial. The Supreme Court has stayed the death sentence.
“The Prime Minister also appreciated the efforts of Nirbhaya`s mother, who now runs the Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust for the security and welfare of women,” the government press added.
