NEW DELHI: That some people in the Indian legal profession have primitive mentality can be gauged from the behaviour of defence lawyer AP Singh in the Nirbhaya gangrape case in which all the four accused have been given the death sentence.
After additional sessions judge Yogesh Khanna gave the death sentence to the four convicts on Friday, this lawyer found fault with the victim Nirbhaya – who was returning home on that fateful night (Dec 16) after watching a film when she and her male companion boarded the chartered bus in which the shocking gangrape took place.
This worthy lawyer AP Singh said, “Why don’t people first control their daughters? If my daughter was roaming around at night with her boyfriend, and having sexual intercourse before marriage, I’d take her to my farmhouse and burn her alive.’’
Obliquely, he was smearing Nirbhaya as a bad character who invited the trouble upon herself by going out with a male.
Without knowing that there is a rape every 21 minute in India, this ignorant lawyer said, “If after this verdict, there are no rapes in the next two months, I shall not file an appeal in the High Court.”
Turning on the judge who delivered the verdict, this lawyer said, “Judge saab aap satyameva jayathey ke jagah jhootameva jayatey ko uphold kiya, ye political pressure-eva jayathey hai, vote bank politics eva jayathey hain.’’
He didn’t spare Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde either, saying that the minister brought political pressure on the judge by his statement that ‘death is assured for the four convicts in the case.’
Slamming the lawyer, Delhi Bar Council President Surya Prakash Khatri said, “It doesn’t call for any advocate to make such a statement.”
The legal body may take action against the lawyer at its next meeting as a number of organizations have complained against his outburst.
