NEW DELHI: Hindi comedian Raju Srivastava on Wednesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Kanpur-born Srivastava, who has his unique style of comedy, was fielded by the Samajwadi Party from Kanpur. But because of lack of support from the local Samajwadi Party leaders, he refused to contest on that party’s ticket.
Interestingly, Raju Srivastava had challenged Narendra Modi to contest from Kanpur
The BJP may field him from his hometown. For a party aspiring to lead the next government, Srivastava is the latest from the entertainment to join its ranks.
Just the other day, the saffron party fielded actress Kirron Kher from Chandigarh.
Welcoming Raju Srivastava into the BJP, party president Rajanth Singh said, “Raju is a well-known artist in the country. He has resigned from the Samajwadi Party membership and returned their ticket also. I accept Raju Srivastava as a member of the BJP.”
Srivastava said, “I want to work for my people. I have not joined the party anticipating an important post or responsibility.”
Among other stars fielded by the BJP are Kirron Kher from Chandigarh, Bollywood singer Babul Supriyo from Asansol in West Bengal, and Bhojpuri star Manoj Tiwari from Buxar in Bihar.
