MUMBAI: Spoilsport critics and other party-poopers be damned. Shahrukh Khan’s latest release and his first sojourn into Rohit Shetty’s kingdom of the corny and the comic, has swept the box-office , making it the most successful opener of 2013 so far.
The weekend collections of Chennai Express have out-raced the other box-office behemoths of the year, namely Abbas-Mustan’s Race 2 and Ayan Mukerjee’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
According to reliable trade figures, the opening-day box-office collections of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Race 2 were Rs 19.45 crore rupees and Rs.15.12 crores, respectively.
Chennai Express collected a staggering 33.12 crores on its opening day. The underwhelmed reviews have not diminished the box-office momentum over the weekend.
Trade pundit Taran Adarsh says, “ The weekend business of Chennai Express has been historic. All previous records lie shattered. The season of biggies has commenced on a high note with a thundering success. The boxoffice numbers for Chennai Express are magical , and not just in India but overseas too.”
Adds Taran,“The opening of Chennai Express is humongous. At the moment it is not competing with Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal series or any of Rohit’s earlier films.Chennai Express is competing with Salman Khan’s record-breaking blockbusters.”
The success of this sambar-lassi concoction, a la Ek Duuje Ke Liye should put to rest all the voices of dissent from within the film industry which would secretly have us believe that the best of King Khan is behind him.
“On the contrary, his best has just begun for Shahrukh Khan. We’ve not seen collections like these in Patna and Bihar for a very long time,” says Bihar exhibitor Arvind Sharma.
Cheers to that.
