TORONTO: The Canadian Tamil Congress has condemned attacks on Muslim-owned properties and places of worship in Sri Lanka, after the most recent horrendous attack near Colombo last Saturday.
These targeted attacks by Sinhala Buddhist nationalist groups have grown in numbers in the recent past, and as is habitual in Sri Lanka, none of the perpetrators have been brought to justice, the CTC said in a statement
“The lukewarm and ineffective measures taken by law enforcement and government officials has emboldened the extremist Sinhala Buddhist organizations, and the attacks have kept growing,” said David Poopalapillai, National Spokesperson for the Canadian Tamil Congress.
Most Tamils in Sri Lanka are mainly Hindus and Christians.
Recalling that just two weeks ago Tamils had observed the 30th anniversary of “Black July”of 1983 when Sinhala nationalist mobs killed over 3,000 Tamils in the streets of Colombo and all across Sri Lanka, the CTC said it condemns the recent attacks on Muslims, and urges the international community to send a strong message to the Sri Lankan government that it will have to take effective steps to stop these attacks.
